Palm-nut Vultures

An almost vegetarian bird is the Palm-nut Vulture. Most of his diet consits of oil palm nuts and other fruits like dates. The rest (~ 35 %) is fish and small animals like insects. I saw this pair in a forest in Gambia, where they still occur frequently.

Black Birds

A pair of Black Birds in a city park. Black Birds are the most common birds in the cities of middle Europe. During the last years, their numbers declined drastically. The reasons are unclear some were infected by the Usutu virus that is similar to encephalitis. Another reason could be the environmental changes in and around the cities.

Long-tailed Tits

A bird species that I really like is the Long-tailed Tit; I saw a small flog of the birds near the Altmühlsee in southern Germany. The birds belong to the subspecies with the name Aegithalos caudatus caudatus whit a white head (the local species is Ae. caudatus europaeus with a black crown stripe) and that is common in northern or northeastern Europe. Around here they are winter migrants and in rare cases they breed.
It was a small group of 8 birds with some Marsh tits and a treecreeper. The moved fast trough the underwood and I could only make photos of individual birds

Migration time

A flock of geese (Greylag or Greater White-fronted Geese) flying to the North. Some of them stay over the winter here, others coming from the South and fly over southern Germany to the Baltic Sea or to Scandinavia.

Golden silk orb-weaver

A Golden silk orb-weaver in the Abuko Nature Reserve in Gambia. The species is perhaps Nephila senegalensis. These spiders have a size up to 6 cm and produce very stable and giant nets. The networks are now of medical interest because the silk is very stable and biocompatible. Even clothes were already made of this material (golden silk).

Yellow-crowned Gonolek

The Yellow-crowned Gonolek (Laniarius barbarus) is a very colorful bird. He is widespread in Western Africa but rare to see, because he prefers thick undergrowth. I made these photos in the Bijilo Forest Park in Gambia. Here the birds are common and are a keys species of the area.

After visiting us, the group continued food search with the inspection of a park ranger car. They look innocent and cute but can be little crooks.

Harmattan in Gambia

Sunrise in Gambia with Harmattan, a dry wind that blows dust from the Sahara to the South. That winds can block the sun and make an foggy atmosphere.
